How to Play 7 Card Stud Poker

7 card stud as the name suggests is a poker game, played with seven cards - three dealt face down and four dealt face up. The best five of the seven held cards in a hand is the best hand and the winner of the game of 7 card stud.

7 card stud consists of seven betting rounds and a bet and raises are allowed in every round. The game begins with every player pooling a predetermined amount into the pot. Each of them deals with three cards, out of which one is dealt face up. The player with the lowest face up card starts with the first betting round. This is known as 'Third Street'. In case, the lowest cardholder is slow in betting, he or she is automatically 'folded' or eliminated in the next round.

A card is face up before the next round of betting in the game of 7 card stud. This second round of betting is known as 'Fourth Street'. Now the highest hand bets or 'raises'. A player can make a single or double bet. When the opponent makes a single bet, the player may either raise or place a single or a double bet. If the opponent makes a double bet, the player can only raise the same amount.

The game of 7 card stud proceeds when the next card is dealt face up before the fifth street, also known as the third round of betting. Here the betting doubles and the game continues when the next card is dealt face up in the 'sixth street' or the fourth round of betting. The last and final card known as 'River Card' is dealt face down in the 'seventh street' or the final round of betting. The best hand after this round wins the pot.

In the poker game of 7 card stud, the pot can also be won by a player betting before any other player calls, before getting the seven cards. The maximum and the minimum betting limits; the money pooled in the pot; and the other finer points of the game are generally decided upon depending on the size of the game.
